Police inspector dies inside patrol van in Aba
For the second time running, in less than two weeks, officers and men of the Aba Area Command of the Nigeria Police were thrown into mourning following the death of one Inspector Friday John serving in the area.
It was gathered that Inspector John, who hailed from Cross River State and lived on ‘E’ Line, Judge’s Barracks, Aba Area Command slumped and died inside a patrol van while on duty in the city last Saturday.
Penultimate week, Kaka, the wife of another police Inspector also from Cross River State, Augustine Egem, who lived on the same ‘E’ Line at Judges Barracks, died after a brawl with the husband on alleged account of a relation’s intrusion.
According to a source, Inspector John had earlier complained of slight fever and bought some drugs with which he treated himself after which he led a patrol team to monitor the compliance of last month’s clean up exercise on Saturday in the city.
The source further added that hardly had the patrol van left the area command’s premises than the Inspector started complaining of strange feelings inside him and asked the driver to move slowly.
Before his colleagues could know what was happening to their colleague, the police Inspector, who was on the front seat had slumped and started fuming in the mouth.
He was reported to have been immediately rushed to a private hospital where he was confirmed dead. His colleagues, eager to see if the life of the Inspector could be saved howeaver, took him to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba where he was confirmed dead by doctors.
His corpse was later deposited in a mortuary the same day.
When Daily Sun visited the area command, some policemen were seen in groups discussing the death of their colleague, who they said was hardworking.
Supol Anari Anari, officer-in-charge of Anti Robbery Squad, who spoke on behalf of the area commander, Rabiu Dayi, described their fallen colleague as a gallant officer, who served his fatherland diligently.
He said they all would miss him and extended the command’s condolences to the wife, children and other members of the family the deceased left behind.
